In Which I Discover Just How Juvenile I Truly Am.

Disturbing moment this afternoon. Turns out that I am completely obsessed with Hugh Laurie, who plays the eponymous main character of my favorite TV program, House.

In case you don't know already (and what on EARTH is the matter with you if you don’t? It’s only been hailed as the best show on television!), House is a medical drama primarily involving a crabby antisocial doctor who bears more than passing resemblance to Sherlock Holmes, both in his brilliance and his drug addiction. Every Tuesday night, Greg House manages to comment on his boss's rack, hit someone with his cane, alienate his only friend (that adorable kid from Dead Poet's Society, all grown up), insult his partners, irreversibly offend his patients, play his Gameboy obsessively, and, somewhere in there, to diagnose and cure a mysterious (and sometimes heretofore unknown) illness that had the rest of the hospital staff totally stymied.

I suspected the obsession during last night's episode, which probably was not but definitely should have been titled (รก la Friends) "The One Where House Has To Decide Whether Or Not To Make Out With Sexy Blonde Jailbait." If you'll indulge me, I'll give you insight into my entire thought process during said episode:

On Screen: (House blustering around, comparing autistic child to monkey, making sheep’s-eyes at Jailbait, commenting on Dr. Cuddy's low-cut top, etc., etc.)

Me: Wow. That Dr. House is pretty. Love him. Lots. Wonder if I could get a walk-on role on the show and hide myself in his trailer. He's only 8 years younger than my mother. Huh. But has two sons. Interesting possibility. Would he be more or less attractive with English accent? Stoppit. Must pay attention to show. (10 minutes pass without another thought.) Wow. That Dr. House is pretty. Love him. Lots. (Etc.)

So, you see, this has become a problem. I have a full month to attempt to conquer my addiction, since evidently baseball playoffs will be taking the place of Fox's primetime lineup until the end of October. Augh!

THANKYOU FOR SOMEONE ELSE HAVING AN OBSESSION WITH HUGH LARIE!! Not really him.. but his character I guess... Hes cunning to me... but then at some times Im like what the heck is going through your brain... but yes... House... what a fantastic show... its addicting.... very addicting... most def. my favorite show. (considering its really the only thing I watch on TV.)

Considering a British accent makes anyone more attractive, Im pretty sure He'd be even more cool with his true accent.

Well, and it's so bad, your BROTHER Tvo's it to watch later, since he's always at work Tuesday night! I missed it, too, but he wouldn't let me watch it with him because he was too far into it to catch me up :(

Dear Laura (and Allison),

I say quit watching House altogether. Join us here at Laura's home church in our "October-Fast" by giving up House for a month, and praying instead.

You can't make stuff like this up. Ziff is one heck of a name though. By the way...how does House get such a great American accent? I just discovered that he's a Brit. Wad up, Laura? How's life treating you, my friend?

It's a great show. But I'm not obsessed with Hugh Larie.

I've heard he does a lot of practicing and speech coaching to hone his American "accent". Isn't that weird to think about?

He's got nice eyes but that scruffy beardish stuff has got to go...

Bobby, that's probably good.

And Lorie, every once in a while he shaves -- but I've always loved scruff. Harrison Ford comes to mind immediately.

I've never seen House, but I have seen a lot of Hugh Laurie. He is a comic genius. I hope I'm not fueling anyone's obsession, but if you like British comedy, you should get DVDs of the Blackadder (starring Rowan Atkinson, but I don't think Laurie was around for every season) comedy series and the Jeeves and Wooster series with Laurie and Stephen Fry.

Blackadder is great, but probably TOO British for most Americans to get.

I have to say that some British comedy just doesn't strike me as funny at all. Some of it is great (vintage "Are You Being Served?" for instance) but I really only forced laughter at a lot of Monty Python. I can handle about ten seconds of farce and then the comedy has got to move on.
