Why Em and Gwyd Will Love the American South

So, I've come up with a little theory about why I think my Aussie friends Em and Gwyd are going to love the American South. Incidentally, this theory also helps explain why I loved Tasmania so much.

Both Tassie and Kentucky:

  • have profound, and often unappreciated, natural beauty
  • are looked down upon by the "cooler" parts of the country
  • have a whole set of jokes directed toward them -- jokes relating to inbreeding, ignorance, etc. (Seriously, name one thing you know about Kentucky that's not a) the movie Elizabethtown or b) about hillbillies marrying their cousins)
  • have a sort of homey, mellow coolness all their own
  • have a legit, growing indie music/art scene

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. We'll see if my theory is correct.

I reckon they'll have a blast in the South.

Thank you, Pryderi, for illustrating the point I forgot to mention!

The South is the only place in America you'll still find use of the word "reckon."

I reckon they will too.

Fergittin' about yer friends in the Ozarks?! That's plum unneighborlike. :-)

Never heard of it...

or b) about hillbillies marrying their cousins)

If you insist. ;-)

In no particular order:

- it's the home of the longest continuously running sporting event in the country (aka "The Fastest 2 Minutes in Sports")

- it's the home of the longest cave system in the world

- Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis were born there

- it's the birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken

- it's where Edison gave his first public demonstration of the incandescent light bulb

- it's the home of Fort Knox...and the General Patton Museum

There ya go. I reckon y'ought ta feel a bit better now...maybe.

;-)

I went to a Corbin once.

I'll agree. It felt like Tasmania.
